Work In Progress, the Foundation's newsletter, comes out three times a year following each board meeting. It lists grants approved at that meeting and offers other news about the work of grantees.
The current issue of Work in Progress (May 2008):
"Green" Legislators
There are plenty of environmental issues to go around. Air pollution. Global warming. Water quality. You name it. For the average citizen, there are just not enough hours in the day to get up to speed on it all. But what do you do if, like many state legislators, a fundamental
part of your job is staying on top of these issues?
The Story of Public Housing
For Deverra Beverly, president of the ABLA homes on Chicago’s West Side, public housing is more than
just the place where she goes to work each day. It is also the place she has called home her entire life. It
was this experience that led Ms. Beverly, along with fellow lifetime ABLA resident and friend, Beatrice
Jones, to conceive of the idea of a public housing museum more than a decade ago.
Homegrown Talent
Chicago is positioned to become a global leader. From the city’s strong leadership to its powerful multinational
corporations to its vibrant ethnic communities and historic Olympic 2016 bid, the signs are there. A
critical component of the city’s success is its strong workforce.
Promise of Education
Two years ago, Illinois signed history-making legislation to
make preschool available for all 3- and 4-year-olds in the state. Today, a team of advocates,
educators, parents, policymakers and others throughout Illinois have banded together to make this a reality.
