MONEY AND POLITICS: New Study Illuminates
Midwest Sunshine Laws
A study funded by the Joyce Foundation and conducted by Citizen
Advocacy Center (Center) found that five Midwestern states have
weak open government laws. The Center analyzed each state’s
Freedom of Information and Open Meetings Acts and found the
laws were sporadically enforced with no statutory authority to
implement them.
In addition, state employees are not adequately trained to
implement open government policies. The study was distributed by
the Joyce-funded Midwest Democracy Network, an alliance of
political reform advocates.
