ENVIRONMENT: Protecting the Great Lakes –
The Work Continues
Following the historic passage of the Great Lakes Compact last fall,
the Joyce Foundation is continuing to work with Midwest states and
stakeholders on interpretation and enforcement of the law. A grant
to the Council of Great Lakes Governors (CGLG) will provide state
and provincial water resource agency staff with information and
skills necessary to implement the Compact.
As each state designs plans to maintain compliance with the new
regulations, CGLG will work with other Compact partners to provide
localities with tools and resources to ensure: the avoidance of
significant water use impacts; the appropriate measurement of
cumulative impacts; and, development of water conservation and
efficiency programs. The goal is to provide support to not only meet
the requirements of the Compact, but to protect the Great Lakes for
future generations.
