The Joyce Foundation is supporting the Council for Advancement of Adult Literacy (CAAL) in its mission to modernize existing adult education programs and to expand the nation’s adult education system. In 2006, CAAL helped launch the National Commission for Adult Literacy. The two-year grant from Joyce will be used to disseminate the policy recommendations in the Commission’s final report, Reach Higher, America and advocate for their implementation.
The U.S. economy is increasingly producing jobs that require some postsecondary education or occupational training. However, 88 million adults have at least one educational barrier—no high school diploma, no college, or English language needs. With Joyce as a partner, CAAL will work to educate and inform legislators while building a broad coalition of support for the expansion and improvement of adult education to better serve low-skilled workers.
