In an op-ed published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on February 3, Jeff Martinka, executive director of Joyce grantee Sweet Water — the Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust Inc. — addressed the discrepancies between actual threats to water quality and public perception.
The op-ed was published one week after Sweet Water released the results of the 1000 Friends of Wisconsin’s survey of public opinion and knowledge about water resources, which revealed that the public believes sewer overflows and industrial waste still account for the bulk of water pollution even though the vast majority (90 percent) of pollution now comes from sources such as urban and rural runoff. This explains why, Martinka writes, “84 percent of the public believes that their actions don’t affect water quality, nor do they see a role for themselves in helping to protect our water resources.”
