The Joyce Foundation is delighted to announce that Cecilia Muñoz, a national leader in public policy and public interest technology, has joined its board of directors.

A veteran of both government service and the nonprofit sector, Muñoz is currently a senior advisor at New America, where she launched a major initiative on public interest technology and oversees locally focused projects. She also is a senior fellow at Results for America, a nonprofit that advances the use of data and evidence in policy making.

Muñoz served for eight years on President Obama’s senior staff, first as director of Intergovernmental Affairs and then as director of the Domestic Policy Council. Before that, she spent 20 years at the National Council of La Raza (now UnidosUS), the nation’s largest Hispanic policy and advocacy organization.

“Cecilia’s evidence-based policy making experience will be an enormous asset for the Foundation,” said José Alvarez, Joyce’s board chairman. “We are looking forward to utilizing her considerable talent and wisdom on the Joyce board.”

Muñoz joined Joyce’s board of directors in February 2021 after serving on President Biden’s transition team.

“I have been an admirer of the Joyce Foundation's vital work for many years, and I'm honored to have the opportunity to contribute to it at this critical time,” Muñoz said.

She advises the Open Society and JPB Foundations, serves as a trustee of the Kresge and MacArthur Foundations, and sits on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. In 2000, she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for her work on immigration and civil rights.

Muñoz is a Detroit native and daughter of immigrants from Bolivia. She has two grown daughters and lives with her husband in Maryland.
