The Joyce Foundation Announces New Education Team

Butch Trusty And Jason Quiara Will Lead The Foundation’s Key Program Work

Chicago, IL – The Joyce Foundation has appointed Butch Trusty as its new Senior Program Officer for the Foundation’s Education Program, and Jason Quiara as its new Program Officer for Education. Each comes to the Foundation with a strong background in national and state education policy as well as nonprofit and philanthropic strategy.

“I’m delighted to welcome Butch and Jason to the Joyce Foundation,” Ellen S. Alberding, Joyce Foundation president, said. “Butch’s work with nonprofit organizations and experience with two large urban school districts adds valuable policy expertise and national education reform perspective. Combined with Jason’s experience and commitment to driving change on state education issues, this new team will continue a track record of success and elevate the Foundation’s work to support new education reforms in the Great Lakes region that can serve as models for the nation.”

Previously, Mr. Trusty led several efforts at The Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit strategy consulting firm. He has worked with a wide range of nonprofit and philanthropic organizations and school districts, including the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, the Education Equality Project, and the NAACP LDF, on issues of mission alignment, finance, program and organizational design.

Mr. Quiara joins the Foundation from Jobs For the Future, a national nonprofit organization that helps states strengthen their education and workforce development policies. He led a multi-state initiative aimed at improving secondary and postsecondary education outcomes for low-income and minority students by implementing new, evidence-based education models.

Mr. Trusty and Mr. Quiara will oversee the Education Program’s annual $8 million annual grant portfolio, which supports efforts to improve the quality of teachers in high-need schools, while also promoting high-quality charter schools and policies aimed at ensuring that children can read by third grade. The Joyce Foundation and its grantees have focused in particular on national, state and district-level efforts to ensure every student has an effective teacher and on promising ways to accomplish that goal by strengthening teacher recruiting, hiring, support, evaluation, tenure, and compensation systems.
