The Hyde Park Art Center is one of four 2020 Joyce Award winners that honor collaborations between artists of color and arts and cultural organizations throughout the Great Lakes region.
The $50,000 grant will allow Hyde Park Art Center to commission visual artist Faheem Majeed to create a new monumental artwork, exhibition, and related programming to address the important legacy of the South Side Community Art Center.
Majeed’s new artwork will continue his ongoing investigation of culturally specific institutions and their histories. Recently designated a historical landmark, the South Side Community Art Center will serve as his subject matter for an exhibition involving teen artists, a performance piece by The Seldoms dance company and public programming to connect artists of all ages working across Chicago’s South Side. The focal point of the commission will be a monumental charcoal rubbing of the SSCAC’s façade to memorialize the iconic building.
“This grant will allow us to partner with Faheem to explore, challenge, and spark discussion around the underlying issues that contribute to a devaluation of historically marginalized voices, institutions, and neighborhoods” said Kate Lorenz, executive director of Hyde Park Art Center. “Most importantly, the planned public programs will connect the audiences of Hyde Park Art Center and South Side Community Art Center more deeply, allowing us to stand together for the benefit of our shared community.”
