This webinar is part of a series hosted by the Joyce Foundation that focuses on firearms research commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2019, Congress resumed funding firearms research through the CDC, and now the first funded projects are starting to produce new and important findings for the field.
Description:
The panelists discussed new research exploring the motivations for firearm ownership among military personnel, as well as how various firearm ownership and storage practices impact suicide risk. The research also explores how mental health and substance use disorders are associated with gun ownership and carrying among veterans, and how these factors contribute to suicide risk. Ultimately these findings will inform a discussion around opportunities for suicide prevention in this population.
Thank you to the panelists Dr. Robert Bossarte and Dr. Catherine Dempsey. You can access Dr. Bossarte's presentation here.
